I was reading The Gifts of Imperfection last week and a passage stood out to me as the themes of My Mad Fat Diary. “I’m gonna pair this up with some images from the show,” I said to myself.
"Belonging is the innate human desire to be part of something larger than us. Because this yearning is so primal, we often try to acquire it by fitting in and by seeking approval, which are not only hollow substitutes for belonging, but often barriers to it. Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance."
Brené Brown, Rae Earl and Sharon Rooney are all on Twitter. I uploaded my collage to Flickr and tweeted it to them. And I got a reply from Sharon!
(You know you’ve married the right person when you call him and squeal “Sharon Rooney tweeted me back!” and he’s like, proud of you.)
On Tumblr, the post got 18 notes.
“That’s because Finn isn’t in it,” I thought. So I did an experiment.
While I was trying to choose appropriate screencaps for the “Belonging” collage, I saw the ones of Finn where Rae is telling Izzy about her date with Archie. I grabbed those, too.
“Let’s see how a Finned collage fares...”
It exceeded the number of notes in a couple hours. And netted me six new followers. (It's up to 72 notes.) While an inspiring quote may be smiled upon, what really moves a fangirl is cute boys and FEELS.
I went back to the screencaps site and perused again. What stood out to me was the scene where the lads give Rae a ticket to the Oasis concert. I never noticed while viewing it (which I have multiple times now) just how wistful Chloe looks.
I paired three shots with the exchange Rae and Chloe have at the end of the episode. Since this one was Chloe-centric, I did not expect it to get many notes.
Oh, but it took off. Why? Because in the first frame, Finn is ignoring the Chloe in his lap to look at Rae. (Like, five of the reblogs so far have added text at the bottom just to point this out.)
The fangirls say "no! we shan't have pathos for Chloe!"
(Exceptions, of course.)
