Bat morning to you

So I was loading the dishwasher this morning, right? And we used the crock pot last night, so it was soaking the sink, you with me? And I was dumping out the water so I could fill it with warm soapy water and I look down AND A LIVE BAT IS IN MY KITCHEN SINK.

“Nnnngggaahhhh!!!”

This bat, too, met an untimely death.

The “bat man” comes out tomorrow to give us an estimate.

Out tax stimulus check is in the mail; I hope it’s enough to pay for a bat exclusion.

The two bats that got into the house this week were both pretty small. I’m hoping this means they are the bat babies born this year. Cause if those suckers can fly, it’s time to find a new roost, baby.

P.S. Illustration of the month for July already uploaded because Kris and I are “staycationing” next week and I don’t know how much I’ll be online.

July08 illustration of the month

Last year, Jaimie and I were called upon to design the t-shirt for United Way’s annual Day of Caring. They were so pleased with the results, we were pretty sure we’d get a call this year. And we did.

Here were the instructions we received:

on the front they want Live United in black and white.

on the back the theme is 24/7 “United Way is there everyday” 2 or 3 colors.

Last year, there were three colors on the front and back. The United Way logo is actually four colors (red, yellow, two blues), but they just used one blue.

Here is what I submitted first:

Upon seeing this, they responded that no, Live United is the only thing that goes on the front. And it’s a no-go to single out any parts of the logo. And oh yeah, we gotta change that 24/7 thing.

United Way (the parent organization, not just the local chapter) has restrictions about their logo. You cannot use just the circle; you have to use the whole thing. Now, I personally think it’s okay to steal the little man shape. I mean, it’s a circle over a Y. It’s an element. But I also respect that the local peeps don’t want to upset the big peeps.

Jaimie apologized that I had spent time creating this cool thing that won’t get used, but I assured her I am used to it.

I also understand how it goes when you see something for the first time, you have a gut reaction that you don’t get from just talking about it. They had discussed the 24-7 thing and it sounded great. And then they saw it in big bold numbers and realized “this makes it sound like we’re open 24-7.” It sure does; that’s what Jaimie and I thought they meant to imply.

I headed back to the drawing board by visiting the United Way website. I see that LIVE UNITED in all caps Helvetica is part of the www.liveunited.org campaign. A-ha, so I’m trying to localize a national campaign. Gotcha.

Meanwhile, the UW folks envision a new idea for the back of the shirt. They want a clock that has words instead of numbers. Working around the clock for you, yes. Open 24/7, no. I’m there.

Here was my “sell” for the second design:

On the back, I used the same font on the clock. The words GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER. in the boxes comes from the same look on the www.liveunited.org website. I used the red and gold from the United Way’s logo but black instead of blue because you’re already paying for black ink on the front of the shirt and to use blue would mean paying for another color. Plus, the black has a lot of pop.

They loved the clock but shot down the black and used blue instead. Eh, you can’t win ‘em all.

Redesign: Baby Info Sheet

When I pick my son up from daycare, I get a piece of paper that tells me when he ate, slept and had diaper changes or medications and if he’s out of diapers. I noticed that all of the lines were really close together and figured it must be a pain to fill these things out. So I redesigned it for them.

Row, row, row

Ben was playing with his pirate ship and I recognized one of the melodies and began to sing “merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.” He smiled at me and said “row, row, row.”

Da hell?

Oh, I guess he knows the song from daycare.

Batricide

Today is our one-month anniversary of living in the new house. We’re still only using one shower (Kris wants to re-grout the upstairs one), the built-ins have been scheduled and postponed twice and there’s a ceiling fan in a box in one room and a light in a box in another. But we’re parking in the garage, and there’s a fancy custom gate on the deck and window treatments in the living room!

And now we’ve had our first bat in the house. It coincided with finally getting to watch an entire movie* on the big TV in our fancy new living room. Ben was asleep on Kris on the couch and Satine was curled up on my lap on the chaise. I heard something, which I assumed to be Frodo, at about the same time that Satine freaked out and Kris stage-whispered (sleeping kid and all) “There’s a bat in the house!”

I never actually saw said bat. It was dark (movie lighting) and by the time I opened the front door and we turned on the lights, the bat had taken to hiding behind the entertainment center. He was given ample chance to escape and chose not to do so.

Kris called his dad for reinforcements. While Ben and I waited upstairs, the wayward bat met his demise.

I think it might be comforting to at least know how the bat got inside.

*August Rush. Y’know, I knew it would be cheesy. But the monumental melodrama and epic improbability I did not expect.

Beergrimage

When Kris and I visited On Tap in May, I noticed the initials IPA on some of the beers and asked him what it stood for. He couldnt recall, so he called Eric, our resident brewmaster. (IPA = India Pale Ale, btw.)

From that moment, we knew we wanted to return to On Tap with Eric in tow. We also wanted the Woods on board because they have talked of opening a brewery someday. (Carol and the Jones were absolute gravy.)

It took over a month to make the trip a reality, but the timing worked out really well as it became a birthday beer-grimage for Eric who turns 24 today. (Whippersnapper!)

I do so love sitting at a table where everyone is willing to pass their food and drink around. The only blemish on the excursion was that the server we so adored in May works behind the bar on Sundays.

5 years

Five years seems like a long time, but it doesn’t feel like you’ve been gone so long.

I wish you could meet Ben. It soothes my soul that he often reminds me of you.

Impromptu Party

Our plans were to wait another month before having a big party at the house. Yknow, time to get those built-ins made and more boxes unboxed. But then Terica needed somewhere to have a surprise party for Nathan, and there you have it.

I do still want to have a big open house party next month. Maybe around Kris birthday.

Ben was able to go back to daycare today. It was stressful this week taking a day and a half of sick time (between him and GJ, I hope I dont get sick this year). Kris had to reschedule a client and we called on Dad and Patsy to keep him Wednesday.

The upside was getting to spend a little more time with the kid. I saw him stick his finger in his nose, which is new. He totally played all the ladies at the Times when I brought him up for a visit. And when he really enjoys a book, he wants me to read it four times in a row.

I roll my eyes when I see him pick up the baby animals book. Dog, arf, arf, I say. Cat, m-rrowww. Pig, oink, oink. Chicken, BOK! Bok bok bok. But I know after he moves past this stage, when I see this book, I will say to Kris aww, remember when he used to make us do all the animal noises?

Ben continues to climb on stuff he shouldnt, but this week he fell off the high chair and the chest in the sun room, so maybe that will deter future escapades.

We took him to the doc this week and found out he weighs 25 pounds. I gotta say, it feels like more, especially when he doesnt help with the hanging on. I carried him and a gallon and a half of milk up the basement stairs yesterday and he was a mass of not hanging on.

Kris called the garage door peeps out this week. Hinky is how Donna described them. A little adjusting and a trip to Sears and now Kris and I can park in the garage! Another friend of ours recently bought a home with a garage and we agree that it feels strange at first to drive your car into the house.

Google Docs

Twice this year, I have tried to tell someone about Google Documents. Both times I have been met with a look that tells me they don’t “get it.” Neither time did I have the internet handy so that I could do a visual demonstration.

I often lament a lack of visual demo when trying to explain to someone the concept of a vector illustration. I can only say “it’s not actually text anymore, it’s just the shapes of the letters” in so many different ways. I digress.

With Google Documents, I can create a word processing document, like a letter, and save it on the internet. Big deal, right? I could do the same with Hotmail. But I can also open .doc e-mail attachments even if I do not have Microsoft Word on my computer. You’re glazing over, I can tell. And also, you have Word, so why do you care?

But hazzah! I can also create spreadsheets. I created a spreadsheet for our household budget that I can check from home or at work when I look at my calendar and realize it’s the 18th and that the Mastercard is due tomorrow and oh, no, did I pay that already? Whew. Yeah, good thing I could access my Google Doc from anywhere!

Still not sold, are you? Gah, what is your problem? You must not be a cloud computer.

Also useful: let’s say I’m working on a bazillion certificates for the Gadsden Times’ Readers’ Choice awards and that all the winners are in an Excel spreadsheet and that tomorrow I will be working from home because Ben has a cold that’s contagious and can’t go to daycare and my Mac laptop doesn’t have Microsoft Office. Let’s just say that.

Good thing I can access my Google Doc from anywhere.

Ecofabulous

Okay, maybe it’s just the owl that got me, but I love the masthead of Ecofabulous. Nice font choice, good colors, sweet icon for multi-purpose use.

I also think these two “house ads” are darling:
